Visvanatha Temple

Description

Visvanatha Temple is known as one of the finest temples of Khajuraho, and shows all the elements of the developed temples. It includes entrance-porch, mandapa, maha-mandapa with transepts, vestibule and sanctum enclosed by an ambulatory with transepts on the sides and the rear. The Visvanatha temple, situated in the north-east extremity of the western group of temples. Like the Lakshmana temple, this temple is a temple of the panchayatana variety, but of the four subsidiary shrines only two have now survived in the north-east and south-west corners. The sanctum is of the pancha-ratha variety with three proliferations. If we see architecturally then this temple comes in between of Lakshmana and KandariyaMahadev temple. Inside of the mandapa of Vishvanatha temple there are two Sanskrit inscriptions engraved on stone slabs. The larger inscription to the proper left is dated in VikramaSamvat 1059 or C.E. 1002, and belongs to this temple. It gives the genealogy of the Chandel kings from Nannuka to Dhanga and informs us that the latter king built this temple and dedicated it to lord Shiva. In the sanctum of this temple a linga, made of emerald was installed. The inscription is a posthumous panegyric (Sanskrit prasasti) on Dhanga written some two years after his death. The temple must, however, have been completed during his lifetime. The emerald linga has long since vanished and been replaced by one of common stone. The other inscription does not belong to the Visvanatha temple. It is said to have been found on the site of a now extinct temple of Vaidyanatha near Khajuraho. It is dated in VikramaSamvat 1058 or C.E. 1001.
