Madan Mahal on the top of the hill upon a large boulder rock

Description

Madan Mahal stood on a huge amount of granite. Many palaces are built in the premises, out of which the main palace is situated on a huge stone segment, which is known as MadanMahal. The eastern part of this palace is situated on huge stone segment and western part of this palace is situated on several small stone segments. This palace is made with the amalgamation of lime, stone and lakhori bricks, which showcases the zenith of Gond art. Plaster of ancient lime are still visible on some parts of this palace. This palace was protected from all the sides by forests, natural mountains and moats. Many natural ponds had been constructed in nearby areas of this palace, which shows the farsightedness of the construction of this palace. The old main gate is situated in the middle of present horse-stable building, on both of its sides, remains of open windows (jharokha) and niches are still visible. Remains of Gond paintings are still present in these niches. Horse-stable was a two storey construction and its stairs open towards the interior portion of premises of the palace. Many fragments are scattered in the palace’s premises, which proves that many more remains could have been present during ancient times, which faded away with the passage of time. It has been constructed by Madan Shah, 33rd heir of Gond dynasty, during later half of 15th century. This palace has also been associated with Queen Durgavati and her son Veer Narayan. This palace has been used mainly as security check-post.
