Tewar (23o8’44” N, 79o49’11” E) is a small village, situated approximately 12 km away from Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. The city is located between 23º10' North latitude and 79º59' East longitude and average elevation of 411 metres (1,348 feet).This village preserves the history of several ancient dynasties like the Mauryas, Shungas and Kalachuris etc. Findings of these dynasties have been unearthed from here time to time in various seasons of excavations. For the first time, Dr. M. G. Dikshit excavated Hathiagarh (Tewar) mound in 1952 on behalf of the Sagar University. Then another season of excavation conducted during 1965-70 under the joint collaboration of Department of Archaeology of M.P. Government, M.S. University of Baroda, Deccan College, Pune and Sagar University. Under the direction of Prof. K. D. Bajpai and Dr. U. V. Singh, another excavation has been done during 1966-67. Results of previous excavation has been confirmed again in 1967-68 in subsequent excavation by the Sagar University. During all these seasons of excavations, innumerable amount of coins, pottery and artefacts have been unearthed.
