Devi Jagadambi Temple

Description

This temple is situated north of the KandariyaMahadeva temple, with the ruined little shrine, now known as the Mahadeva shrine intervening between them, and about 75 yards south of the Chitragupta temple.  Devi Jaoadambi temple faces east and is planned like the Kandariya temple. In this temple PradakshinaPatha around the sanctum and the mandapa are lacking. The temple was earlier dedicated to Vishnu, whose image may be seen over the entrance to the door jamb of the sanctum. Inside the sanctum is an elaborate framework of stone, which originally contained an image of Vishnu. The latter has gone and an unfinished but ancient image of his consort, the goddess Lakshmi, has been substituted in its place. In ignorance of its real character, however, this image has been painted black and is now worshipped as Kali or Devi Jagadambi after whom the temple is now called. The external decorations of this temple is closely resemble those of the Kandariya temple and are equally sumptuous of the Dikpala figures, that of Yama on the south side of the sanctum is remarkable for its expression, and the figure of Siva, eight-handed and three-headed, in the lower niche on the west facade is worthy of notice. Its sanctum is based onpancha-rathaplan below the jangha but is sapta-ratha from jangha upwards. Unlike the Chitragupta temple, which has six pairs of door-keepers disposed all around the maha-mandapa interior, this temple shows only three pairs of them two in the east and one in the west of the maha-mandapa but none in the lateral directions. This temple was built during 1000-1025 C.E.
